Trotters can run for 'Let Hope Live'

TROY — Along with getting some good exercise at this year’s Turkey Trot, participants can help fund cancer research by collecting pledges and donations for Let Hope Live.

This is the first year that runners — and walkers — will be able to participate in the event and donate to the local organization which supports research for brain tumors and other children’s illnesses, said Kyle Bryce, the founder of Let Hope Live: The Andrew Christian Bryce Foundation.

Since forming the foundation in 1999, shortly after her son died from a brain tumor, it has collected $300,000 for research.

“Pediatric brain cancer is one of the most prominent illnesses for children, but it is also one of the least funded,” she said. “We’re trying to give these families and research companies ammunition to fight the fight and help these kids to the finish line.”

The Troy resident collects money for the organization and, along with research, it is used to help families with sick children pay their doctors’ bills and other expenses. The organization receives funding through golf fundraisers, walks, silent auctions and other events, she said.

In past years, the organization has attended the annual Turkey Trots and recognized children there as Andrew’s Warriors. But, this year, participants can also collect pledges for the organization as part of the Let Hope Live Run/Walk for Seriously Ill Children and Brain Tumor Research.

“This is the first year that we found out we could do this,” said Bryce.

In recognition of this, artist Victor Juhasz has created a design and T-shirt image for the event. It features Leonardo DaVinci’s Virtruvian Man.

Juhasz, a graduate of Parsons School of Design and mainly known for his caricatures, has created illustrations for The New York Times, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post.

“We are beyond thrilled to get him to do a design for this event. He has a huge heart,” said Bryce, noting that Juhasz’s wife died of cancer.

The specially-designed T-shirts on sale for $50, and they hope to find a buyer for the original design which could sell for $10,000.

Bryce said she will be giving out prizes, including a Caribbean cruise, to teams who earn the most pledges and funds for the foundation.

Donations, which can be taken for the upcoming run and year-round, can be sent to 9 Duncan Lane., Troy, NY 12180, said Bryce who can be reached at 273-8020 for questions about the not-for-profit organization which touches the lives of about 1,200 children in hospitals each year.

Registration must be done before the day of the event, taking place from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving in downtown Troy.

“Without hope, people can’t do much,” said Bryce.
